Chipotle Doesn’t Just Mean Burritos Anymore, as Company Opens Pizzeria Locale

Chipotle is as synonymous with burritos as Pizza Hut, Dominos, and Papa John’s are with pizza; however that may be all about to change. Back in January the company announced plans open a Pizzeria Locale in Kansas City, Missouri later this year after the resounding success of the first location, which opened in Denver back in 2013. The Pizzeria Locale chain is also looking to open two additional restaurants in Colorado.

The announcement of the Kansas City location came just months after Chipotle opened the second Pizzeria Locale in Denver. A spokesman for Chipotle said there are currently no plans to expand to other cities. Aaron Allen, founder of the restaurant consultancy Aaron Allen & Associates, told the Huffington Post however that, “If this was just a side project, they’d do a couple more of these in Colorado, we expect to see a whole lot more opening in a short period of time.”

Like many of the restaurants mentioned in our article about the growing trend of build-your-own pizza places a few weeks back and almost identically to how Chipotle does burritos, Pizzeria Locale allows customers to create their own specialty pizza. Customers choose fresh ingredients and toppings from a buffet style line and line chefs will then slide the customized pizzas into an oven specially designed to cook them in just two minutes. This gives the customers an exquisite fast-casual dining experience akin to Chipotle’s traditional Mexican eateries and allowing the company to corner the market for two of America’s most popular foods.

This is part of the reason fast-casual restaurants like Chipotle and Panera have grown so much in recent years. Customers are willing to pay a little more for streamlined menus, customizable meals, and fresher, higher-quality ingredients. Which has also led to Chipotle operating 10 Southeast Asian fast-casual restaurants called ShopHouse, in the Los Angeles and Washington D.C. areas. In fact according to a Chipotle spokesperson both Pizzeria Locale and ShopHouse are on faster growth trajectories than Chipotle itself was when it first opened.

With pizza being far more popular than Mexican food in most markets Chipotle is poised to take over the blossoming fast-casual dining industry.
